Measuring what matters in the lab

IE-Newsletter-Blurb-Banner

For laboratories, sustainability progress is no longer just about good intentions. It is about measurable action. The My Green Lab Certification program’s Impact Estimator tool helps labs translate everyday operational changes into clear environmental and financial outcomes, from avoided energy, water, and waste to greenhouse gas reductions and cost savings. In a sector where there is so much opportunity for immediate improvement, this tool gives teams the data to understand their impact, communicate progress, and make a major difference quickly.

A recent analysis from Uppsala University found that tubes represented a significant source of plastic waste in the lab, with more than 48,000 kg of plastic generated across tube categories including microtubes, centrifuge tubes, cuvettes, and tubes with various closure mechanisms.

Here are a few ways labs can reduce the environmental impact of tubes without compromising research quality:

✔ Select smaller volume tubes to match the volume requirements of the experiment
✔ Reuse tubes in non-sterile or low-risk workflows where appropriate
✔ Choose lower impact materials such as bioplastic tubes where available
✔ Shift to lighter weight tubes

Small purchasing and workflow decisions can add up to meaningful reductions in laboratory waste and resource consumption.

Learn more about reducing single-use plastics in our recent article here.
