Greener Clinical Lab Testing Now Within Reach

New Partnership between My Green Lab and Siemens Healthineers aims to reduce the environmental impact of analyzing clinical laboratory samples. 

Siemens Healthineers is now the sole in vitro diagnostics manufacturer recognized as a My Green Lab Accelerator Partner for the European Union and the United Kingdom. Through this collaboration, Siemens Healthineers will support clinical labs in pursuing My Green Lab Certification and advancing measurable sustainability progress.

Key highlights from this partnership include

• Support for clinical labs seeking My Green Lab Certification across the EU and UK through dedicated guidance and partnership.
• ACT Ecolabel certification for Atellica clinical lab analyzers, the first clinical diagnostic instrumentation to receive this distinction.
• Certified Atellica program, offering rigorously restored systems as resource-efficient alternatives to new instrumentation.

New ACT Ecolabel Certifications

Grenova, Greiner Bio-One, and Miele have received ACT Ecolabels, setting new standards for sustainable lab products.

Grenova TipNovus

TipNovus is a high-efficiency washer that reduces single-use plastic waste by enabling pipette tip reuse. It’s engineered for low energy and water consumption, durable performance, and supports circular lab practices.

Greiner Bio-One Centrifuge Tubes and Serological Pipettes

Greiner Bio-One has certified more products with the My Green Lab ACT Ecolabel. After being the first producer to publish the ACT certification for serological pipettes, Greiner Bio-One has now extended this certification to its centrifuge tubes and further pipette models. The main highlight of the tube certification is the packaging content, which has received a score of 1.0. Greiner Bio-One’s racks for centrifuge tubes are made from up to 50 % recycled material. When looking at the outer packaging, the amount of recycled material is even higher: all cartons are made of ≥99 % recycled material.  Additionally, both Greiner Bio-One production sites for tubes and serological pipettes demonstrate excellent Renewable Energy Use. The factory in Frickenhausen, Germany, operates on 100% green energy and features its own solar panels.

Valuable tips and hacks to help green your lab: a 'How to Green Your Lab' monthly series!

This month's How to Green Lab is to not let water sources run when they don’t need to be running! If you’re washing glassware or filling up your flasks with water, a common practice may be to walk away while the faucet is running. This can lead to unnecessary overflow. Instead, always keep your eyes on a running water source.

Alternatively, consider a timed water valve that runs for a certain amount of time or only discharges a certain amount of water. Or, install foot petals so you’re only pumping water when needed.
