2025 Freezer Challenge winners and energy savings, register for the 2025 Summit, sustainability articles, and a sneak peek of our upcoming new website!
This year’s International Freezer Challenge brought together a record number of laboratories from around the world, amplifying the collective impact of sustainable cold storage practices. A total of 3,724 laboratories from 36 countries participated in this year’s challenge, representing a 23% increase in lab involvement compared to 2024.
Since 2017, the Freezer Challenge has saved an impressive 108.1 million kWh of energy, reinforcing its impact as a catalyst for sustainable change in labs worldwide.
Each participating lab contributed to the collective success of this year’s Freezer Challenge, and we’re thrilled to spotlight those whose efforts stood out. Congratulations to the winners and to all who took part in making this year’s Freezer Challenge a success!
The Axygen® HybridRack™ Pipette Tips marries functionality and sustainability by pairing a sturdy, polypropylene deck with a paperboard base to allow for more sustainability in science. All without sacrificing quality, comfort, or reliability. These Axygen tips are supplied in sustainable paperboard racks that help reduce the amount of plastic used in each case by about 70%.
The B Medical Systems U701V Variable Speed Ultra-Low Freezer has received the My Green Lab ACT Ecolabel. This ACT-labeled ULT freezer includes features like energy-efficient performance (the lowest energy usage by cold storage currently on the ACT database) and natural refrigerants, designed to reduce environmental impact while maintaining reliability in demanding research environments.
Be part of a powerful global gathering as the scientific community comes together to tackle the biggest sustainability challenges facing labs today. With the theme Rising to the Challenge, this year’s summit explores the shifting regulatory landscape, the importance of transparency, and how science can lead with integrity and impact.
Discover the next evolution of the My Green Lab Certification and ACT Ecolabel, hear real-world success stories, and get a behind-the-scenes look at how our tools are helping organizations meet rising global standards.
The 2025 Summit is a virtual event and free for non-commercial attendees!

This month's #HowToGreenLab is to buy in bulk to reduce packaging waste!
Labs go through an incredible amount of consumables, and all that single-use packaging adds up fast. Purchasing supplies in larger quantities not only reduces the amount of plastic, cardboard, and foam entering the waste stream, but it can also cut costs and reduce the carbon footprint associated with shipping. When possible, coordinate with your labmates or neighboring labs to place joint orders and avoid duplicate purchases. Just make sure to track inventory to prevent overstocking or expiration.
Next month, we’re unveiling a refreshed My Green Lab website, redesigned to better showcase the work we’re doing together to make science more sustainable.
What’s new:
Easier to navigate
Mobile-friendly
Designed to highlight our global impact and the partners who help make it possible.
Fresh Look. Same Bold Mission. Stay tuned!
What Does Lab Culture Mean, and How Can It Be Used to Combat the Climate Crisis?
The consequences of climate change due to human activity are not only recognised for their impact on the environment, but also for the resulting financial and political impacts. Essential scientific research conducted in labs around the world also has a negative impact on the environment.
Culture is centred around people's way of life, as expressed through their values, beliefs, habits, and activities. Addressing and changing culture is a fundamental tool in permanently transforming the science community into a global leader on sustainability. While changes in energy sourcing and lab building infrastructure are important, behaviour change is also a key component in moving towards a meaningful sustainability shift in labs.
Research Ireland Announces 72 Sustainable Laboratory Certifications
Research Ireland’s Sustainable Laboratory Certification Pilot Programme was launched in October 2023, with the aim of bringing best-in-class, sustainable research practices into Irish research labs.
Marking what was a global first, Research Ireland became the first national research funding body in the world to spearhead a certification process in lab sustainability.
At the end of 2024, Research Ireland commissioned an independent evaluation of the Sustainable Laboratory Certification Pilot Programme to assess its effectiveness in meeting its sustainability goals and inform next steps for Research Ireland. The evaluation was very positive and provided a significant number of actionable steps for Research Ireland, pilot participants, and certification providers to take forward.
The Clock is Ticking on Climate Change. Support Sustainable Science
Did you know that laboratories are among the most resource-intensive spaces, consuming up to 10 times more energy and water per square foot than typical office buildings? At My Green Lab, we’re helping scientists reduce their environmental impact without compromising scientific innovation.
When you donate to My Green Lab, your gift empowers scientists to create measurable sustainability in laboratories worldwide.
Support transformative change today, because our planet can’t wait.
In the ever-evolving landscape of scientific discovery, laboratories serve as crucial hubs for research, diagnostics, and innovation. The Laboratory Transformation Seasonal School offers a unique platform for scientists, researchers, and laboratory professionals to converge, explore cutting-edge developments, and gain invaluable insights to optimize laboratory operations.
